The prestigious honour of carrying Canada’s flag for the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games went to Simon Whitfield on July 27, 2012. Whitfield is one of the greatest Canadian athletes, who is in his 4th and final Olympics. He was the very first gold medalist in the Olympics’ very first triatholon in Australia in 2000 and a silver medalist in Beijing in 2008.

Back in 2000, when he won gold,  he was expected to finish in the top 20, and after the swim and bike ride events, he was 25th. Then, all of a sudden in the last 200m, he took over and won the gold in a stunning upset.
