April 2012

Any blogosphere fans going to the 2012 Calgary Expo? This year’s Comicon features the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation principle cast reuniting for the very first time since the TV series went off the air. Also, many celebrities will be coming:  legendary comic artist Stan Lee, the original Batman Adam West, Fringe’s Dr. Bishop & Astrid, Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), Amanda Tapping from Stargate: SG-1, Hayden Panettiere from Heroes, Lance Henriksen (from Millennium & Aliens – he was awesome in Aliens), the Battlestar Galactica actors Captain Kara Thrace / Starbuck, Chief Galen Tyrol and Tom Zarek (who was also Cpt. Apollo of the original B.G.).

I had to purchase a separate ticket for the special reunion, as I was a huge fan of Star Trek: TNG, as I grew up watching them when it first aired waaay back in 1987 – 1994. Wow, I have nostalgic memories of each of these characters on the show. Not all episodes were great, but you know, there were many outstanding well-written ones that I can still remember clearly to this day.

The original cast of ST:TNG that will be there at this historic event are Sir Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Data), Michael Dorn (Worf), LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) and Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar).

Tickets were $35 – $140, and they sold out in one day! I got the $80 price range so I could at least see their faces (lol).

I’ll let you know later how it went! (AND WAIT FOR MY COSPLAY PHOTOS – hint: video game character)

Yes, MMORPG fans!!!  Since September 2011, there had been no news about Square Enix’s exciting Dragon Quest X (10) for the Nintendo Wii (yes, it’s an exclusive – ie. it’s not coming out on other consoles!). It will finally hit Japan on August 2, 2012, meaning North America will most likely get the unconfirmed English version soon afterward (hopefully sooner than later).

I’m excited for this game, as I grew up playing several of these in the series (Dragon Warrior on NES, Dragon Quest 4 on Super Famicom, Dragon Quest 8 on PS2, and Dragon Quest 9 on DS).

Now, for the first time in the series, they’ve decided to go with online MMORPG. Like the 11th and 14th  Final Fantasy series,  there will be online only with a monthly subscription fee. But they have announced that there will be a “kids time” where users can play for free.

If you’re worried if the timing is a little late as the Wii is in its twilight hours, Square Enix is going to also release a Wii U version (*the Wii U is coming out at the end of 2012), meaning the online servers will continue for quite a while.

Any MMORPG fans out there? or Dragon Quest fans? Are you excited for Nintendo Wii’s very first MMORPG??

Did you know the character designs are by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragonball?

Once and a while you HAVE to recommend a video of “guy-with-instruments-playing-video-game-music”, if it’s done impressively. This one is amazing! Seriously!! FreddeGredde plays 34 songs in 10 minutes. See how many you recognize!

My favourites were: Bubble Bobble (I lol’ed), Banjo Kazooie (the kazoo!), Dr.Mario, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country and Gradius.

Tell me which ones you LOL’ed to, and which were your favourites!!

kudos to anyone who recognized the Kingdom Hearts song “Simple and Clean” by Hikaru Utada (a hugely successful pop singer in Japan) (such an AWESOME song – SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t played K.H. to the end)

OMG!! Wow!! Mom/Dad, stock up now for your kids’ next birthday/Xmas presents!! Toys R Us (Canada) has an insane 40% off sale on all Hasbro-made board games that are under CDN$32.99 !! I’m going to get me some savings right now!

There are too many to list (84 games), but the most popular ones that I noticed that are definitely worth getting: Scrabble Flash (reg.$30, now $18), Operation (reg.$20, now $12), Trivial Pursuit Bet You Know It (reg.$30, now $18), Battleship (reg.$21, now $12.57), Scattergories (reg.$30, now $20), Taboo Reinvention (reg.$33, now $20),  Trivial Pursuit – Disney For All (reg.$25, now $15), Connect 4 Launchers (reg.$25, now $15), Risk (reg.$25, now $15), Scribblish (makers of Cranium) (reg.$25, now $15), Cranium 2.0 (reg.$30, now $18), Twister (reg.$20, now $12), Pictureka (reg.$20, now $12), Pictionary (reg.$33, now $20), Hungry Hippos (reg.$20, now $12), Clue (reg.$20, now $12), Monopoly (original) (reg.$20, now $12), Perfection (reg.$20, now $12), Sorry ($20, now $12), Mouse Trap ($20, now $12), Game of Life ($25, now $15), Jenga ($20, now $12).

Hey parents!!! This sale ends April 26, 2012, you snooze you lose!! But I’m betting the most popular games will sell out first, so hurry! (and bring your Air Miles if you buy in-store – 1 mile/$25)

I love board games as it’s the only thing that brings my entire family together and enjoy some simple fun (though, New Super Mario Bros Wii and Mario Party also does this…).

Occasionally, you come across a cover song of a classic that MUST be shared. If you know Radiohead’s “Creep”, which has been covered everywhere (even on American Idol / X-Factor), then this cover version is a MUST-HEAR.

It starts off a little “meh”, but wait till you get to 2:25, you will get shivers (or “goosies” as Jennifer Lopez would say). Amazing stuff!

The singer is Carrie Manolakos, a former Broadway singer, who was Sophie in Mamma Mia! She was promoting her upcoming debut album Echo at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village.

(Keep in mind that she sings the original lyrics, ie. F-words included).

Yes, if you haven’t bought this yet, NOW is the time!! EB Games (Canada) has NHL Slapshot bundle for CAD$4.99 (new).  I wanted to buy this immediately when it came out, as you can use the Wii Remote like a hockey stick to play the game.

When this game had first come out, it was CAD$69.99! The game is not that bad, as IGN gives it 8.0/10, Gamespot also 8.0/10 and 1UP gives it a ‘B’ grade.

Some tidbits from the above websites:

  • “Sharp controls and an ingenious hockey-stick peripheral make NHL Slapshot a great arcade hockey game.” – Gamespot
  • “EA has succeeded in making a fun party game that’s easy for players of all ages to pick up and enjoy thanks to its superior controls and fast pace… For kids and parents looking for a good hockey game, NHL Slapshot is the game of choice on Wii.” – 1UP
  • “The stick actually works and makes it a fun experience. Flick the stick forward with the puck and you’ll wrist shot it. Pull back before flicking and you’ll slapshot. And while skating near a player, giving the stick a horizontal shove will perform a check move that’ll, with the right timing, send the player to the ice.” – IGN

This game at this price is a must buy for deal-hunters, families with kids, party-gamers and arcade hockey fans; not so much for hockey fans that want realistic HD simulation hockey.

HURRY! This sale for AAA title Resistance 3 for PS3 for $19.99 is $30 off regular price and sale ends on April 19, 2012!! As of time of printing, there’s still stock online at Futureshop.ca and local pick-up is available through the website.

IGN gives it a 9.0 / 10 and GameTrailers gives it a solid 88/100 score.

Click here for a video review by GameTrailers of the game.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for Resistance 3, go check it out! It’s amazing!

As like all my onomeister’s OMG Deals of the Day, this deal is most suitable for  Canadians (unless you want to pay extra for shipping – which would pretty much kill the deal).
